Aging & Strategies for dealing with Dementia
Aging & Strategies for dealing with Dementia
Introduction
This 3-hour training event provides an insight into the ageing process and dementia and their impact on the elderly. This understanding is crucial for developing coping strategies and person-centred care, and to help maintain service users’ independence, quality of life and wellbeing, as well as the peace of mind of their carers and families.
Objectives of the training
· To put the impact of the ageing process and the effect dementia has on the elderly into context;
· To propose supportive strategies for dealing with age and dementia;
· To provide approaches to developing person-centred care, promoting independence, well-being and quality of life;
· To consider strategies and actions when caring for someone who exhibits what is sometimes described as “challenging behaviour”;
· To reinforce the idea that a person who is elderly or physically or mentally frail can still respond emotionally to stimulation as long as you know what motivates them;
· To improve both the carer and service user’s quality of life and stimulation;
· To emphasise the importance of a Life History.
What will be achieved?
· Better understanding of the impact of ageing;
· An understanding of the four basic stages of dementia, the behaviour associated with each stage and strategies for dealing with this behaviour;

· Strategies for dealing with “challenging” or “difficult” moods or personalities;
· Practical suggestions for stimulating and motivating a dementia sufferer and developing a person-centred care plan;
· Awareness of best practice – Do’s and Don’ts
