Life History Development Training
Life History Development Training
The past - a key to caring in the future
Introduction
An elderly, physical or mentally frail person’s life history is an essential part of providing a person-centred approach in maintaining their quality of life and planning future care.
Research shows that care professionals, nurses and residential home care staff and third parties all respond more positively when they “know” a client’s background and personality. It helps them empathise with the client and avoids a client feeling misunderstood, anxious or frustrated, which can lead to agitation or, at worst, “aggressive” or “challenging” behaviour.
A Life History project is rewarding and stimulating. It is also of great value to family and friends, young and old, as they reflect on the person’s life, share memories and explore their own recollections as a means of easing their sense of loss.
Objectives of the training
· To understand the value of a person’s life history
· How a Life History can help support the elderly and those with dementia or a learning or physical disability.
· To suggest ideas and approaches to building a Life History as part of a person-centred approach to care and future care planning
· To help families and carers communicate and interact with an elderly person or those with dementia or a learning or physical disability.
· Help to create strategies to prevent a person from becoming agitated, stressed or confrontational.
· To help provide appropriate stimulation and ongoing activities.
· Promote best practice and strategies when compiling a person’s Life History
· Action plan for getting started
· Meeting the requirements of the Commission for Social Care and Inspection, for which a Life History is part of the care plan
· To use the focus of a person’s Life History as a springboard for other activities that can encompass all age groups and bring together families and the professionals involved in their care.
